Miss Spencer was appointed as consultant ophthalmic surgeon at The Manchester Royal Eye Hospital in 1998. Her areas of interest and expertise are the surgical and medical management of glaucoma and cataracts.

Miss Spencer received her general medical training at The University of Bristol and specialist ophthalmology training initially at Cheltenham General Hospital followed by The Tennent Institute of Ophthalmology in Glasgow. She gained her Doctor of Medicine in 1995 at the University of Nottingham with a thesis in Optic Disc Measurement whilst a Lecturer training in glaucoma with Professor Vernon. She also completed a fellowship in glaucoma with Professor Roux at the University of Pretoria in South Africa.

Throughout her career Fiona has shown commitment to developing a specialist practice in glaucoma and as a consequence has become known for her expertise in specialised glaucoma service development. She has always striven to place patients' needs at the forefront of her practice.

As a consultant Fiona is particularly aware of the importance of providing the highest standards of training for junior medical staff. Therefore, since her appointment at Manchester Royal Eye Hospital, she has always had a significant role in the training of junior ophthalmologists, optometrists, students, nurses and general practitioners.
