glaucoma surgery

Fiona Spencer was appointed as consultant ophthalmic surgeon at Manchester Royal Eye Hospital in 1998. Her major interests and areas of expertise are surgical and medical management of glaucoma and cataract surgery.

At Manchester Royal Eye Hospital, Miss Spencer provides a general ophthalmic service and cataract surgical service to the local community as well as a specialist adult referral glaucoma service for the North West Region for more complicated and serious glaucoma. This includes full diagnostic service and medical, laser and surgical management of glaucoma. She and her team treat approximately 1000 patients per year.

Her areas of expertise are:
Glaucoma: Primary open angle glaucoma, primary angle closure glaucoma (including acute glaucoma), secondary glaucoma.
Medical management of ocular hypertension and glaucoma.
Surgical management of glaucoma: enhanced trabeculectomy (using 5-Fluorouracil, Mitomycin C), bleb needling and refashioning, drainage tubes (Molteno and Baerveldt)
Specialist laser services include cyclodiode laser treatment, selective laser trabeculoplasty, iridotomy and iridoplasty for glaucoma.

Fiona Spencer was responsible for initiating the development of the glaucoma service at the hospital, is a member of the team involved in setting up a referral refinement protocol for optometrists and the optometrist led glaucoma assessment clinic. Fiona regularly speaks on glaucoma service development at national meetings and has been consulted by other hospital units wishing to set up similar schemes.
